| Every
so many years in a democracy the citizens get to choose their favourite
colour and put a cross next to someone who spends all their time
in a party. Democracy in action. People respond to an election in
different ways but the most recent and interesting reaction is the
total and utter lack of interest.
The main thrust of this seems to
be that whoever you vote for the government always gets in. People
have mentioned about wanting to vote for 'none of the above'. An
interesting idea but with one major flaw that concerns us here.
Voting for 'none of the above' is making a decision to make no decision.
It means handing over the keys of your responsibility to someone
else.
Responsibility is a
dirty word these days, to only be spoken in hushed tones. In a proper
democracy this means that if the policies you want aren't on offer
from the current candidates then you should in fact become a candidate
yourself. The problem is that we live in a voyeur society where
no-one is prepared to take responsibility, let alone stand up, but
we're all very quick to point the finger of blame. If you do point
the finger of blame always remember that there are still three fingers
pointing back at you.

Just in case you're wondering, this
isn't a thinly disguised political call to action for you to vote,
its just a metaphor for us to consider that there is always a general
election going on in life and only one of the candidates have our
best interests at heart.
So instead of moaning that nothing
is going your way, step up into that secret booth of the mind and
put a cross next to the one name that you find on the ballot paper,
a familiar name, your name. Pick up the pencil and make the most
important decision of your life. Take responsibility for your actions
and direction in life. You and you alone have the power to control
your destiny.
Vote for you. And if you do, I can
guarantee that you'll win. |
