“The formation of a problem
is often more essential than its solution, which may be merely a
matter of mathematical or experimental skill. To raise new questions,
new possibilities, to regard old questions from a new angle, requires
creative imagination.” – Albert Einstein
This book is unusual in that we have
provided only half of it, only the questions. You are the
other co-author who can contribute the other half, the answers.
Creativity is a tricky thing to define.
As Einstein states in the quote above, to ask a productive question
is a creative act in itself.
Because our Left-brain thinking is
pretty well trained, the aim of this book is to build up the mode
of right-brain thinking. Most of these questions concern themselves
with thinking holistically, randomly, intuitively, emotionally and
non-verbally to activate right-brain directed thinking. We can’t
begin the creative process using the Left-brain mode of thinking
logically, linearly, sequentially and critically. If we do, we’ll
get ‘blocks’, get bored and come up with no ideas.
Your creativity is a blend of your
personality, your intelligence, your environment, your motivation,
your patience, your attitude, your confidence, your style of thinking,
your diversity and your level of playfulness - it is a whole brain
activity and these questions will get your whole brain thinking.
These 52 questions are a
great way to warm-up a team brainstorming session. You
wouldn't start a physical workout without a warmup, so a mental
workout. Your brainstorming session should be no different.
A great way to activate Right-brain directed thinking is to begin
by problem solving something irrelevant or silly rather than the
problem at hand.
You never know, a great idea may be
created while you’re still in the process of your warm up,
just by answering one of these questions, before you’ve even
put forward the direction of your particular problem in hand.
Enjoy the journey!
