I'm a Genius – Get Me Out of Here!
An entertaining and powerful talk on creativity for your school
60 mins talk, any size group (or 1-3hrs workshop for a group up to 50 students)
The top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004. We are currently teaching and preparing children for jobs that don't yet exist, which will involve using technology that hasn't been invented yet, to solve problems we don't even know are problems. We cannot rely on teaching our students facts. Half of what a student learns in the first year of a technical degree will be out of date by their third year. We need to teach them the most important skill of all: to be able to use their own creativity.
What does it mean to 'be creative'? What is creativity and how can we use it? Using stories, examples and songs (sung with acoustic guitar accompaniment), this talk proves that everyone has the ability to be a creative genius in any field they choose.
The talk demonstrates how imagination, science and art are all part of the same creative source and draws stories of scientific discoveries and inventions to inspire students to develop their abilities through to excellence and then to genius and beyond, learning how that journey can become the most exciting one we can ever embark upon.
Creativity is a complex process that involves conscious and unconscious thought to connect ideas together to notice new patterns. It can be harnessed to solve internal emotional problems or generate new external ideas that can manifest as problem solving innovative solutions (making things better), to improve the world around us, to make money or as expression through artistry such as writing, music and visual arts.
This keynotes defines creativity in a way that is understandable, engaging and entertaining. It deals with the main source of blockage to creative intelligence which is confidence and self-judgement. It gives practical and fun directions on how to develop and utilise creativity in everyday life, in particular school applications such as understanding science, creative writing and problem solving as well as how it can and must be nurtured in the future aspirations beyond education.
